I have made numerous attempts to set up a network with this wizard on a
computer running Windows XP and two others running Windows 98SE. The
Windows XP macine is connected to the internet by ADSL. I think I am doing
everything the wizard says and it reports that I have been successful. I
cannot find other computers or share the internet connection after running
the wizard. The troubleshooters for networking and internet connection
sharing do not come up with a solution.
I can get the network working by changing the TCP/IP properties to "find an
IP address automatically" but this of course stops ICS. Has anybody else
had this problem and can offer a solution?

Does your DSL service use PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)? If so, tell the
Wizard to share the PPPoE connection and to use the appropriate
Ethernet connection for the local area network. There might be two
Ethernet connections: one for the DSL modem, and one for the local
area network.

Here are some tests that can verify whether ICS is set up properly:

1. On the XP host computer, right click the local area network
connection and click Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: none
DNS Server = none

2. On a 98SE client computer, go to Start | Run | Winipcfg, select the
network adapter, and click More Info. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

3. If #1 and #2 are right, open a command prompt window on a client
and enter these lines. Each one should get four replies:

ping 192.168.0.1
ping 216.239.39.100
ping www.google.com

If you have an external DSL modem, a good alternative is to get a
broadband router to share the connection between all of the computers.
You wouldn't need to use the XP computer as an ICS host or leave it
running whenever the 98SE computers want Internet access.
