My pc keeps changing it's settings to whatever it feels
like whenever I disconnect and reconnect to our small
office network; then I can no longer connect to the
network, and have since had to specify my ip address
etc. I really need it to automatically detect these
settings. What to do? Thanks.

In answer to your question about the IP settings needing
to be reset each time you reconnect to the office
network. When you start your computer or just connect to
the LAN, your computer begins to search for another
device ( computer or router ) that an give it an IP
address ( this is called a DHCP server, responsible for
handing out IP addresses. ) If your computer doesn't get
a reply, it will give itself a IP address like
169.254.*.* If you have a router check to see if it is
capable of handing out IP addresses. If not then each of
your computers on the LAN will need to have an IP address
assigned manually.

Following up on the reply from Bob,

My question is

How do you know if the router is capable of handing out IP addresses. How
can I check the router to see if it capalble of handing out an IP address.

Many thanks

Aubrey
