If a guest plugs in his computer to a wired LAN where internet and network
are connected by a router, that computer should not be able to link to the
network without knowing the name of the network group. Is that correct?
Will Windows xp scan it and set it up automatically?

No, that is not correct. Windows machines do not need to be in the same
Workgroup to share resources or an Internet connection. The Workgroup
designation is just a cosmetic/organizational function.

I don't know what you mean by your last sentence. Set what up? If a
friend brings his computer to your house and plugs it into your
ethernet network, assuming you have a router providing DHCP and the
friend's machine gets its IP, etc. automatically, that machine will be
able to surf. File and printer sharing is another issue and whether you
can share resources other than the Internet depends on how you and your
friend have set up your machines. This is not an automatic process.

For more help, post back with a clearer description of what you are
trying to do and your concerns.

Unless you have switches with mac filtering enabled or require 802.1X port
authentication the user will have network access and most likely at least
internet access since all the user needs is the default gateway unless you
are using something like ISA proxy server that can require user
authentication to access the internet. The user could also potentially gain
access to your network shares unless they are restricted to users/groups
that need passwords to logon and hopefully use hard to guess passwords. The
workgroup name is only used for convenience of network browsing and offers
no security at all. --- Steve

How to allow the guest to use internet only but restrict his access to share
files and printer? Other computers on the network are sharing files and
folders and printers.
