Network (RPC server?) probbie...

Dave

Hi... i went away on holiday for 2 weeks - 14 days - and the kids have
managed to mess up the PC big style.

150 items of spyware were found between ad-aware, hijack-this, and spybot.

The computer *is* noticeably slower now, and i'm not sure why. I've checked
'services.msc' and everything is started that should be. I'm pretty
competant with networking computers, so the only thing i can presume now is
that some spyware thingy has corrupted some of the dll's used for
networking, or the likes.

Problem also: no xp cd available.

The computer starts up, seems slower than usual, but maybe that's just me
thinking negatively! On startup the USB cable modem (ntl broadband)
connection 'computers' take a while to appear, say a minute at least, so the
net can't be accessed. When it's finally started up, the LAN also states
connected, but there's no plug in the NIC, and the status seems to make out
as if it's trying to connect to something.

I'm fully aware some spyware tries to create connections or fiddles with
your current connections, but there's no connection on the network card so i
don't understand how it can be show as 'connected' - 'automatic private
address' is stated as the IP-address when i check the LAN-status window,
it's as if it's desperately trying to assign itself an IP from somewhere yet
it fails. It shouldn't be doing that in the first place, of course.

There was such a large amount of spyware on the machine (no viruses though)
that i'm convinced it's something to do with the removal of them all.

If anyone can help i'd really appreciate it; the reason i mention 'RPC
server?' as a possible cause is that i ran 'SFC /SCANOW' from the cmd
command prompt and it stated 'error, [the rpc server is unavailable]

- something's messed up networking big style, wah!

Thanks in advance for any contributions!

Indeed I am 'dave'...

Repaired some files with 'sfc /scannow' and also discovered the cable modem
was connected to the pc via both NIC *and* USB....that wasn't me for sure,
some twat's been in at it.

Anyway, useful to know....
