I recently upgraded my XP home to XP Pro since the pc's
can only log onto the network using a guest account.

The Pro machine is still logging in as guest, even though
the user is signing on with his appropriate network logon
and password.

Any ideas? I was under the assumption that XP Pro was
supposed to allow the user to join the workgroup as
themselves and not a guest. The user cannot gain access
to their personal drive on the server if they are logging
in as a guest.

Try disabling Simple File Sharing on XP Pro:

Open My Computer
Go to Tools->Folder Options
Click on the View tab and scroll to the bottom
Uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing", which will let users log in from the
network as their account.

Have him close all the shares and shared files he has open, then go to a
command prompt and type "net use * /d" which will remove all of his cached
connections. It could be he has a cached connection that was logged in as
guest from before you changed the setting. What are the operating systems
on each machine?

the user has XP Pro, and the "server" is running Win 2K
Pro

This still did not work. It said there were no entries in
the list when I typed it in.

He is logging in to his computer using his network name
and passcode. Yes, there is a matching user and passcode
on the server. It (the server) does not prompt for
credentials, just automatically logs him in as guest.

I set up another user on the "server" for him, and gave
access to his personal folder through that new user, and
now he can access his personal folder.

Any ideas as to why I needed to do that??

Simple File Sharing only affects the machine when it is serving files, not
when it attempts to connect to a server?

How are you determining the the XP machine is connecting to the 2K machine
as guest?
