i have several shares set up on my network. when i try to
access them, i get the error:

\\server\share is not accessable. you may not have the
permissions...bla bla bla.

an internal windows 2000 error has occoured.

1. i'm using xp on both machines. i know that xp is
basically 2000 with a new look, but it still seems
strange to say that.

2. full permissions are set, so it can't be a share
issue. the user has admin rights over the share. i have
checked and triple checked that.

3. there are no firewalls or other communication blocking
devices in place.

4. here is the kicker... sometimes the share will work
normally exactly like it is supposed to, but sometimes
70% it won't... in other words, sometimes it can access
the files on the remote computer, and, without anything
changeing, 20 minutes later, i can't.

what is going on here?

Could be a name resolution or connectivity issue. I don't know abot the Windows 2000
error. Next time it happens, try pinging the other machine by name first and if that
does not work by ip address. You could also try using the ip address to access the
share to see if it helps as in \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\sharename. If nothing seems to help
verify that the security options under Local Security Policy/security settings/local
policies/security options are the same on both machines. Also look in Event Viewer
for any pertinent errors.--- Steve

just got your post... and just tried it. the share was
open on the remote computer. i had left the folder open
all day. i closed the folder, then tried to reopen it.
same error... internal windows 2000 error.

tried pinging the hostname. resolves correct ip address.
tried accessing through \\ipaddress. it gives me "an
extended error has occoured"

no errors in the event viewer.

Hi Chris.

It sounds like it may be some sort of problem with possibly your nic
card/drivers or a system issue of some sort. Those are not normal
permissions/network access errors. I don't have any experience with those
particular problems. I would run netdiag on the computer looking for failed
tests that may help pinpoint the problem and consider updating nic drivers
if possible, use netsh to reset tcp/ip as explained in KB link below, trying
a different nic card, and or running System File Checker -sfc /scannow on
your computer as possible fixes. You may also want to post on one of the
networking newsgroups - there is one for XP and win2000 to se if anyone over
there can offer any help. For a cheap nic card, I have had good luck with
D-link. I have had a couple of instances where I had odd networking
problems, and a different nic card fixed it. It may also help to see if the
problem persists in safe mode with networking. If it does not, you could use
msconfig to selectivley disable startup programs and certain services that
may be causing a conflict. Others have suggested than not to leave your nic
properties set to "auto" but instead select 10 or 100 as the case may be and
that cmos or operating system power configurations that allow a nic card to
go into sleep mode may cause a problem as I experienced on my laptop
wireless nic.--- Steve
