network problems - home edition vs professional

My office will soon be upgrading to a server running on XP Professional
Edition, and I was told that since my computer uses Home Edition, this means
I will no longer be able to connect to the network at work. Is there any
way I can get around this problem without having to buy a new operating
system?

There is no such thing as an "XP Professional Edition" server. If they
are installing a "real" Server and migrating from Workgroup model to a
Domain model then to join the domain you will have to upgrade your
Windows XP Home to XP Professional, the Home Edition cannot join a
domain. There are ways of using domain resources without actually
joining the domain. That would allow you to keep on using your XP Home
Edition. Your IT guys should be able to set that up for you. Did you
ask your company to pay for the upgrade?
