Network Problem

I've connected two computers with a cross-over cable
through a D-Link box. The problem I'm having is that the
client works perfect. But the host won't show the client
when I view network connections. If I go to Explorer, and
open-up my Network Places, it will after about 60 secs
display the client. I've run a search on the host for the
client, it displays two results for the computer. They
don't seem to be duplicates as one is displayed 'DVC' and
the other 'Dvc'.

Can anyone offer some advice.

Thanks,
MS Hale

Hi,

I use a cross-over cable and connect a computer running
XP Pro to one using windows 98se. I run the cable from
the XP's onbord LAN directly to the Linksys NIC I
installed in the other computers PCI slot. You can try
the ping command from either computers cmd prompt to see
if they are receiving data. Also the "ipconfg" command
can be useful in verifying your IP and subnet mask
settings.
To use the ping command at the cmd prompt type "ping" (IP
address) or "ping" (workgroup name) without quotations.

Now forgive me for not understanding this properly but if you are using a
hub, why the heck are you using a crossover cable? Crossover is one
connected to the other directly, no hub.
