Network problem - XP2?

I have a desktop (running XP Pro XP2, Cable Internet, two NICs(1 Ethernet
other USB) & a Wireless Access point) and a portable (WinMe,Wireless NIC).
When they both were running Win Me I could access the internet from both
m/cs and move files from one computer to the other. Now that I am running XP
on my main m/c although I can still access the internet on both m/cs I
CANNOT communicate with other m/c, either way.

What have I omitted to do? I have wasted hours upon hours running network
wizards etc to no avail. Can someone end my misery please?

I turned them off already. No difference!

Start with the basics. Are they on the same subnet? Can I ping the other in
either direction? by name? by IP address? From a command prompt;

ipconfig /all

to find the IP addresses.
