Network problem with XP and 2k Pro

Hi I have two computers one running windows XP and the other running Win 2000 Pro. I have an ethernet card in both computers and want to connect the two using an rj-45 ethernet cable. This sounds simple enough but every time I try to connect them, the icon on the task bar on both systems indicates no connection between the two systems. Is there anyway I can connect one with the other to share my high speed Internet access between the two? Thanks for all help and suggestions.
 
You need to connect them with a crossover cable.

I have that's the problem. I have connected them using a cross over cable and still nothing happens.
