I want to print to a network printer that is running on windows XP. The
Computer I am printing from is on windows Vista Basic. I try to add the
printer to my printers folder but a message is displayed 'Acess Denied'. I
tried adding drivers on both computers but nothing works. Please help!

I have Vista Business and am having the same problem. Anyone out there that
can help?

Tom,

The old "access denied ..." error can have several causes.

How are you authenticating between your computers? Is the XP computer running
XP Home, or Pro? If Pro, is it running Simple, or Advanced, File Sharing? If
Advanced, is it using Guest, or non-Guest, authentication? Has the proper
account been Enabled, on each computer, for network access?

And check settings on the Vista computer, similarly.

As long as you have Printer sharing enabled it should work. My vista is
hooked up my XP Printer by going into Vista Network and Sharing, then Add
Network Device, and find the XP printer

Well, yeah it should. But it doesn't or I would't be asking why. I was
previously using an XP laptop that had access to the printer and it worked
fine. I had to replace that laptop with one that had vista installed and I
can no longer access the printer. I have a sql database stored on the same
computer and have no issues accessing the data from the laptop so I don't
understand why I can't access the printer on the same machine.

I've setup Windows Vista in several of my office PC's. Now one of the Vista
PC's have an HP Deskjet 5160 printer installed. The printer has the latest
Vista driver installed. The problem is I can access the printer from XP
machines, but from Vista machines when I try to connect to the printer it
gives "The print monitor port is not compatible". Whatever I try, I see the
printer name on the network but can't connect to it from Vista machines. The
printer is installed on a Vista machine.

Has anyone found an answer to this problem? The xp network works fine but I
can't add the XP network printer on this vista pc. I can even see the printer
queue but can't add it.

Jeffrey,

Thank you for the input. I would like quote it form MS article:

"If User Account Control is disabled on the computer, you cannot install a
network printer successfully. This problem occurs if the network printer is
hosted by a Windows XP-based or a Windows Server 2003-based computer".

Thanks for the replies. The solution turned out to be installing the printer
manually on the vista wireless laptop as local and creating a port
//networkcomputername/printername.
