Network Printing Problem

Home network, two desktops running XP (Home as it happens), Cat-5
cabling to an SMC Barricade 54 MBps WirelessRouter SMC2804WBRP-G.
Recently purchased an HP Laserjet 1020 which works perfectly on a local
USB port on either desktop. When it is connected to the USB port on
the router (which reports printer OK) and set up in accordance with SMC
instructions (IP 192.168.2.1, TCP/IP, etc, all according to the latest
SMC manual on-line), I can ping it OK from the DOS prompt with no
problem, but any print job just disappears into a black hole with no
error or anything and the printer just sitting there looking a me with
absolutely nothing happening on it. The XP printer troubleshooter says
that it cannot ping the printer address??? Everything else looks
perfectly normal.

Any ideas - I thought that the printer was compatible as a network
printer, otherwise would not have bought it (the SMC compatibility list
does include a Laserjet 1010, which should, I thought be close enough).

TO REALLY RUN A NETWORK YOU NEED THE PRO EDITION AND SET SECURITY. THE
HOME EDITION IS A CRIPPLED PIECE OF CRAP

I know that the LJ1020 works on p2p networks fine, also they work fine with a
switch. But I recall many months ago some problem with the 1010 or 1015 not
working with a router was posted here and I cannot remember the outcome. I
recall also that HP tech support was involved. I suggest that you call HP tech
support and ask their advice, there should be a toll free number in your
country.
Somebody else here may remember more.
Good luck
Tony

BTW I seriously doubt whether Home or Pro will make any difference at all, we
have a 1015 networked through a switch to Win 98, XP home and XP pro working
perfectly. I have also set up 1020's and 1022's on p2p networks with various
OS's. I believe the OS is a red herring!

Thankyou Tony,
I also posted the query in the microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web
also (I know, I know, cross-posting, but I would not have if I had
known whether the problem was due to the network or the printer!). Had
one constructive suggestion, that I should add the LPR service from the
Add/Remove programs window - this makes sense to me and I will try this
approach and report when I can. HP support is the fallback, thankyou.

By the way, I completely agree that XP Home or Pro is a red herring -
nothing whatsoever to do with the problem (and this is absolutely my
last comment on this subject, btw - credentials: I have another Cat-5
network running both XP Pro and Home (with an SMC router with a
venerable and totally reliable HP4P Laserjet on its parallel port) and
there is absolutely no operational difference between XP Pro and Home
when you actually know what you are doing and keep an open mind and
your prejudice and tunnel vision under control).
