I have added a network printer to my network, and all clients (w2k/XP) can
use them just fine. Only problem is that when I have a error-situation
(paperjam, out of paper etc), the error message displays on the physical
monitor of the print server. Now, this is a machine i dont wamt to have a
monitor conneted to, as it is a server. Is there a way to redirect the
messagebox with the "retry" button anywhere else? Can I get it perhaps to
the printer client or to a remote desktop session, instead of just misplaced
above the w2k-login window on the physical connected monitor? Does the
server os WXPpro/W2kpro/W2kserver make a difference?

Now this is quite strange, because on my WXPpro
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Provider: RetryPopup = DWORD=0,
even so, the retry dialog pops up in front of my WinXP log in screen when a
remote printout to the share printer runs out of paper.

You can disable the popup UI on Win2k.

With XP the popup is disabled by default.

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Providers
RetryPopup DWORD=0

If this is not a Microsoft driver and does not post the message through the
spooler, you will need to talk to the manufacture. If this is a MS driver
let me know which one

thanks

John,
One solution is to replacfe the stock print manager in windows
with a true print queue. LBM Systems (http://www.lbmsys.com) sells
software that you install on your existing server. That software
manages all printer/queue status and informational messages in pop-ups
and/or email to the clients. They don't even need an account on the
server, and you can have your users manage their own jobs on the
server via a java applet (web, wjview, javaw, etc.) without their
logging into the server (for security reasons).
The software does much, much more, and runs on any windows
version.
