I have a desktop and laptop computer running Windows XP
professional connected together through the netgear Rt314
cable router. The laptop can not see the desktop
computer through network places. The Desktop can see the
latop name but when trying to connect, it says I don't
have permission. Both computers can connect using the IP
address. I can also use the Remote connection on the
laptop to control the desktop computer. Also both
computers are missing the "entire network" option from
the network places. The workgroup is set to the same
workgroup which is PCC. Please help. Thanks

Windows XP doesn't have an "entire network" option or icon in My
Network Places. That's different than Network Neighborhood in earlier
versions of Windows.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on both computers to fully enable file
sharing. That's normally all that's needed to get file sharing
working.

Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on both computers.
Details here:

If you've disabled "simple file sharing", you need to look at the
permissions on the shared disks and folders. This web site has
details:
