Hi everyone,

My firm would like to tighten up on security by emailing documents to
clients in pdf format instead of word/excel etc. I am aware of plenty
of free tools that work as local pdf writers on individual PCs
(CutePdf etc) but what I would ideally like is a network based tool
that all users can access to convert documents into pdf, but
accessable just like any other network printer.

Has anybody got any suggestions for tools or experience in doing this.

I believe Adobe offer a package but that seems to be fairly expensive
so obviously other (cheaper) options would be great!

Thanks!

Sean,
We offer a product called Virtual Port Monitor,
which when used in combination with Ghostscript,
or your favorite PDF maker software, will create PDF
files in a network environment. The problem with other
PDF makers is that when shared on the network, the
spooler impersonates the submitting user, which poses
a problem when the application is running under an
account that does not have permission to access certain
resources, such as the registry, folders, network shares.

Virtual Port Monitor overcomes this limitation by
impersonating a user you select in the configuration
dialog. This "super user" can do its business in a
stable environment, and perhaps write to folders that
other users can't access, improving security.

Virtual Port Monitor isn't a dedicated PDF writer
either. It can be used to perform other tasks, such as
logging or restricting usage. You choose the application
that runs in the dialog, making it a better long term
software investment.
