I'm getting this error

[workgroup name]
(X) \\computername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out
if you have access permissions.

The network path was was not found.

[OK]

So, what I have is a small network of 5 computers. XP Pro/W2k. The computer
I'm trying to access holds some web site stuff and an Access dbase. Everyone
accesses the dbase directly, it's not a split dbase with a front and back
end.

I can't have it keep doing this to me X times each day because if I'm in the
middle of using the dbase and the connection fails, anyone who's every used
an access dbase in this way knows it sucks. Mad errors etc and the only way
to close is to end the process.

So, I've had this error before with other computers in the past, and I've
never complained about. However, in this case (with the dbase) it's
important that I fix the issue. The computer "finds" the network within
minutes of the error sometimes, but once the damage has been done, there's
no going back.

I JUST now got a /!\ balloon tip in the sys tray which I've never ever seen
before..
/!\ [Windows - Delayed Write Failed]
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file
\\DD4100\Networked Folders\Database\bac.mdb. The data has been lost. This
error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network
connection. Please try to save this file elsew

Funny the balloon tip didn't finish the sentance.
So, adding this to the mix, it now sounds like the network card could be
bad...but as Imentioned above, I'd had the first error happen many times one
various computers and those network cards are all fine.

It's not a cable issue because I just got new cables last week cause we did
some moving and stuff.

Any help GREATLY appreciated.

Robert,

how many messages do you see in this thread? Have you read them?
Could you read this message? Please reply, because there is the
suspicion of a break in communications.

The only reply I've seen to this thread is from Hans-Georg Michna

I'm not even able to find this thread using OE unless I do search, other
then that, it's not in my list which makes this difficult...have there been
many replys or are you trying to say something else?

I can find this post on the web based forums but I only see my original post
and from Hans

Robert,

please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm.

I overlooked that older messages under this same subject were at
least a month old. My newsreader had them stored, but they are
most likely no longer on the news server, so you could not
possibly see them unless you used a search engine like Google
News.

But it's good to see that you can and do read the newsgroup.
Some people post something here and then they never return to
look for replies. I'm getting wary of that.

Yeah, I think I've covered most everything in that article already. :(

It's not like it's not working...it does, it just drops often and for no apparent reason.

Robert,

could be a hardware problem like a loose contact or a flakey
network adapter.

To locate problems like this you'd have to swap components and
watch where the problem goes.

Hans you are a life saver, I wish I'd found this 2 or 3 days ago. All my problems are now fixed thanks to your fantastic web site.

Best regards

Stewart, all,

good to hear. I wish I had more time to work on it. It would be
nice to turn it into a question-and-answer problem locator. But
that would be a lot of work.

Meanwhile I'm glad if it solves some problems anyway. :-)

I have arrived late to this thread. What is the web site you mentioned? I am
getting this same error when I try to connect an XP Home Laptop to my
Desktop XP Pro system.

The message is 7 days old. If your news server has a very short
retention time, it may already have gone down the drain. The web
site was mentioned in this line:

Please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm.

I have read through the web site and I think I have applied all of the
suggestions indicated. Is there anything else that you can think of which I
should take a look at?

The details for my situation are:
My desktop is running Windows XP Pro. The laptop is running Windows XP Home.
Both machines are connected to a Linksys router which in turn connects to a
cable modem.

I set up the network on the laptop and set drive C: to sharing. I couldn't
figure out where to set permissions however. The impression I get from your
web site is that one cannot set permissions in XP Home.

After setting up the network on the desktop and marking drive C: as shared,
I can see the drive in Network Places as well as the name of the laptop
computer. I can open folders in Network Places for my own desktop. However,
when I click on the laptop computer name I get the error dialog that says
something to the effect that there is a problem that may be due to resource
unavailable and to speak to the administrator. Following that is a line of
text that says Network Path Not Found.

It may be interesting to know the precise error message. Could
you test this again?

I'm not entirely sure whether you can share the entire drive on
Windows XP Home. Have you tried sharing a subfolder? Even there
some cannot be shared, but, for example, My Documents can be
shared and is shared by default.
