I need help. I have a home network for some time now. I
have 2 desktops (W2K Pro & WXP Pro) and a Laptop (WXP
Home). All my computers could see each other with no
problems. I was sharing drives, files and printers. Doing
FTP and Telnet and HTTP with no problems as well. At
least for he last 8 months.

All of the sudden (I am not sure if it was with one of
the MS security updates), my Laptop stopped
communicating. I can acces the internet (thru my router)
with no problems but I can not even ping my other 2
desktops and my other 2 desktops can not even ping my
laptop. IT is like the laptop is hiden in a cristal ball.
It is behaving as if it was in a VPN Tunnel but I am not
using VPN.

I have checked all setting I can thing of for the last 4
days and have not been able to resolve it. I even checked
he laptop connected wireless and also wired with no
success.

HELP??

Firewall mistakenly enabled? Please have a look at
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm for some more possible
causes.

I chack eveything I could -- no luck. I still can not een
ping.
The Microsoft article also said that Dissabling the Guest
account in XP Home will cause similar problems that I am
experiencing. It also said the dissabling the Guest
account using Control Panel --> Users dissables teh
concol but not actually the account itself. After I read
this i have been trying to find out then how do I really
know if it is dissabled or not and I have not been albe
to figure it out. This article did not say. Do you know?
I am pretty good with home networks and I think have have
checked everything (At least that I can think-of) except
this. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?

Could this be related??

If you cannot ping then something is fundamentally wrong with
the TCP/IP settings. Check the IP addressing. It should be set
to automatic if you use a WAN router.

It is in control panel, computer administration. But as long as
you can't ping the other station, solve that problem first.

I had the HP guys (my laptop is an HP) nads I decided to
try them since I could. After 3 hous on the phone, the
problem was not fixed bu I have more information. Altough
I still can not fix it -- I am hopping someone can help
me. Remember I am running Windows XP Home.

The problem is that everything I was trying (mapped
drives, ping, etc) was using the name o address. IF I use
their IP instead -- I can connect indeed with my other
computer in the network with no problems. The problem
apparently is that the computer is not resolving the host
names. If I include manually the IP addresses on the HOST
file then it works perfect -- although I have not really
fixed the problem.

Would anyone now what the problem is?

Initially I though it happend after the last security
update, but my desktop running Win XP Pro does not have
the same problem -- so perhaps it was not the couse unless
it affects only Win XP home.

Ah, we're getting closer.

Please check whether the DNS Client service is running on your
computer. If it is, stop and disable it permanently. It is only
needed in Windows Server domains.

If that's not it, we'll have to look further.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Still no luck. I stopped
and dissabled the DNS client and restarted and still no
luck. However, I did noticed that my Win xp Pro desktop
has it running and it seems to be working OK.

Yes, it is currently not clear to me why it causes problems in
some networks and on some computers, but not on others.

I'm at wit's end for now. No new ideas. Perhaps you want to skim
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm again to check a few
points more thoroughly.
