Network path not found

My desktop workstation running XP-Pro joined my domain
running Windows 2000 Advanced Server and can access
resources on the server.

My server can ping the workstation using its DHCP-assigned
IP address or its FQDN.

The drives on the workstation are shared to administrator
and others who need access to the files.

But the server cannot cannot access workstation files.

I can see the computer under Network/Entire
Network/Microsoft Windows Network/domain but receive the
message "\\computername is not accessible. The network
path was not found." when attempting workstation access.

The computer name shows up in WINS and DNS pointing to its
IP address.

How can I gain access to the workstation shared files?

From the server if you do a net view \\clientname what error you receive?

I had a case like this yesterday which was resolved by replacing the
network card on the system that could not be accessed. Ping by IP and name
would work, but net view \\ipaddress, or net view \\computername would fail
with "network path not found"

Here was my troubleshooting method:

Does net view \\ipaddress fail with "network path not found"? If yes, then
Not a name resolution issue since it fails by ip address

check the properties of the LAN connection to make sure that "File and
Printer sharing" is checked
check the TCP/IP properties, advanced, WINS tab, to make sure that "Netbios
over TCP/IP" is enabled.

Did you check for possible viruses? If no viruses found, then

Is the workstation and the server on the same subnet? If yes, then a
router's ports being blocked is not the issue.

Look in the event log for any warnings or errors pertaining to your network
card. Disable your current network card and pop in a new one. Assign the
same ip information to the nic.

Can you then access the shares on the workstation?
