I have DSL, and a LAN in my house and in a small building. Generally, I have
three computers hooked up.
House: sol, Win XP Pro
Buiding: met, W2K
ast, W2K-- completely off line now and broken
There's a Linsys Workgroup hub in the building. I sometimes plut in my
laptop to it. lap, Win XP Media
Computers in the building get turned on/off about 3 times a week. sol seldom
gets turned off.
Problem 1: Today I wanted to get something from met via sol. Net Nghbr on
sol showed no connection, nor did Net Nghbr on met. I checked all ethernet
connects. All OK, but no change. I pulled the power on the hub and restored
it. met could now see sol, and I signed on to sol from met. However, sol has
no clue that met is there. I did several refreshes, and zippo.
Problem 2: (today) I plugged in lap in the building to the hub. It does not
seem to have any way to know what's connected to it. I tried search for
computers with the name me* and got zippo. Neither sol or met sees lap.
The names of these computers are much longer. I'm using the first three
characters for them here. Isn't there someway in XP Media to find out all
the computers on the LAN? It has no Net Ngbhood, as far as I can tell.
This sort of stuff goes on a lot. There ought to be some way to get the
network restored without running back and forth many times between the house
and building. Comments? House to building distance is 100'.
