We have a server on an IP of 10.0.2.1, our main scope
being bog standard 10.0.0.0 - 254.

We used to be able to see this server when browsing
through Network Neighbourhood, but now, after no change,
it has disappeared. We can ping it, both with IP and DNS
but I am at a loss as to why we can't see it listed in
the network. Any ideas as I need to get this fixed to do
a remote backup!

Thanks,

Neil

Hi Neil,

Why do you have the server in a different subnet than the rest of your
network?
Is WINS installed?

Marina

Hi Marina,

We had to put it on a different subnet because it needed
a VPN connection and 10.0.0.x was already in use with
another company and the VPN requires an individual IP
that doesn't conflict with any other company.

WINS is installed on this server.

Thanks.

Does it matter that you cannot see the server via Network
Neighborhood?

I assume since you can still ping via IP and DNS then you
can still "map" a drive letter to any of it's shares and
perform all functions as before, correct?

Because that would mean re-designing our existing network
of 200 pc's which is a lot of work when compared to just
adding the subnet and as I say, originally it wasn't a
problem.
