Is it possible to send an instant message to another
computer on my home network

I am using windows xp

Do you mean short message pop-up's? If so Open Command
prompt (Start, Run, Type CMD then OK) When open
type "Net Send followed by the com outer name/ip address
of the computer you want to connect to followed my the
message. I.e "Net Send 192.168.0.1 This is a message"
or
"Net send Me.MsHome.Net Another message"
