Network Message Problem

I am trying to send out a message to our network through Services using the
Console Messenger. When I attempt to send to computer name, it will not go
through. If I add the IP address in the send box with the computer name, the
message gets delivered. Then I can send to just the name. We are using DHCP
and I need to send to PC name rather than IP. Is this a DNS or WINS problem?
Any help would be appreciated, I've about beat my brains in working on this!

Thanks. Bob

OK. How do I set up the WINS using DHCP? Do I need to have a WINS server?

Thanks for the info.

Machine names are WINS
FQDNs are DNS

Yes you need a functioning WINS Server first.

Then it is done in the Scope Options. You need to set the Options #044 and
#046. There isn't much to it,...it will be simple when you see it.

Are these scope options on the local machine or the WINS Server? I tried to
set scope options on the local machine, but it wants to associate them with a
program.

I think we're almost there. We can use the service to broadcast through the
WINS server to the local desktop, if the firewall is disabled. We have had
no success in adapting the firewall settings to allow this exception. Could
you suggest how we do this? We know we've narrowed our problem down to the
local desktop firewall settings. I really appreciate your help in this
matter. Thanks again.

The DHCP Server.

WINS queries are "directed", not "broadcasted".

The best thing to do with a Desktop Firewall on a LAN is to get rid of it or
disable it,...some may get excited when I say that,..but that is the way I
feel about it. If you keep the Desktop Firewall, then it must be configured
to trust "anything" that involves your LAN's IP Range.
