Network hyperlink stops working when saving

We use Office 2003, and we have the following problem using PowerPoint:

1. First I create a hyperlink which links to a document using UNC path
2. I run slideshow to test it´s working, and it´s working :)
3. I save the document to a mapped network drive, and the link is broken. It
looks something like this (..//..//..//myfiles/documents)

however, if I instead save the presentation to the local C drive, then the
link is not broken.

I have tried this on 3 different computers/users with the same result.
I have tried this on PowerPoint 2007, and here it works.

Do you have any ideas?

Thanks,

Form a mob, light the torches, hoist the pitchforks, storm the castle and
demand the heads of the people who refuse to allocate programming resources to
fixing linking problems in PPT.

OK. Rantasy over. Breathing normally again.

One trick that seems to work is to first choose File, Properties and set the
hyperlink base to the UNC path to where you've saved or where you will save the
PPT, even if you plan to save to a mapped drive.

After that, create your hyperlinks. It doesn't work to create them THEN set
the hyperlink base, at least it reliably doesn't work here when I try it.

Our FixLinks add-in will collect the linked files (asking you to locate via
file dialog the ones that PPT has managed to bung the path to and lose). It'll
copy the linked files into the folder with the PPT itself and reset the links
to point there, pathlessly, so they don't break so easily in the future.

http://www.pptools.com/fixlinks/ for more info.

But if your goal is to be able to keep the PPT linked to files on various parts
of your network, FixLinks won't help

Sticking with mapped drives would seem to eliminate the problem but unless
everyone who'll view the presentation has the same drive mappings, that's a
non-starter.
