I have a netwok of 3 Windows XP machines connected
through a Netgear hub and running Windows XPhome. All
machines show on the network but folders on one of the
machines can not be seen from other machines. "Problem"
machine can access shared folders on all machines and
other machines can access all shared folders except those
on "problem" machine. When trying to access the
one "problem" machine, I get the message "\\name is not
accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions".
Steve has suggested this message conveys little useful
information in previous postings. I have looked on this
newsgroups postings and see essentially the identical
problem posted approximate 2 or 3 times every day for the
past week and see essentially the same sugested solution
" 1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet
Connection Firewall on local area network connections --
it's for use only on a direct modem connection to the
Internet. Disable and un-install all other firewalls
while troubleshooting. Details here:
Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall
..htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing.
If the network needs more than one protocol, unbind File
and Printer Sharing from all but one of them. Details
here:
Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_pro
tocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all
computers. Details here:"

There is no indication this solution is solving the
problem and this solution does not solve my problem
either. Any insight into what the problem might be and a
possible solution would be most appreciated.

Randy,
All the suggestions you have seen here are good solutions
to most common errors with XP networking. Much of what
you mention I would consider to be solutions to
infrastructure level problems. Another level of problems
come from logons, passwords and permissions. A user
account with a password must be created on each XP box
that you would like access it's resources whether locally
or remotely across your network. Also a folder needs to
be created that gives permission to the account to access
it. Of course, when you logon from the remote station you
need to use a user name and password that exists on the
machine you are trying to access. Even in these two
suggestions you may not find the solution. Have you
reviewed the short series of XP networking articles that
Microsoft has in the Technet Knowledge Base? You might
find something there that will help. The article number
is 813936.
