i have reset, reconfigured and reflashed linksys router. I am at a loss here.

Hi
Could be the Router, or the computer.
As for the Router the only way to know for sure is by trying another known
to work computer.
As for the computer. Try to refresh the Network Settings.
http://www.ezlan.net/clean.html#refreshnet
Otherwise give the computer a static IP that is not within the Router’s DHCP
range.

My read of this would indicate that you have a device on your network
with a fixed IP address that is within the range of the Router's DHCP.
The router doesn't know this, so it tries to assign that address. When
it does, Windows does a ping to see if it is in use before proceeding
and discovers the conflict. It then asks for another IP address and
gets the same. Finally, Windows gives up and assigns a 169.254.x.x
address.

See if this still happens if this device is the only device connected
to the router. If it doesn't, then find the device that is
interefering and reassign that device's IP address outside the router's
DHCP range or reconfigure the router to use a different range of
addresses for DHCP.

Router (new in august) is connected to husband desktop. my desktop in the
office connects wirelessly via linksys wmp11 to a linksys wrt54g router.
this problem just come up in the past month or so. this network has been set
up for over 3 yrs now. it is my desktop (laptop stays connected) that keeps
disconnecting and reconnecting. it does not look like any settings have
changed. i have reset, reconfigured, changed channels, changed rts and
fragmentaion, ran winsock fix, win update kb884020.

Hi
Router is new, the network was set 3 years ago etc., are reflecting human
emotions of desperations, the fact that it is not working now, and it means
that something is wrong and it has to be found.
Let me recap, you have One Desktop (Husbands) that is connected to the
Router with Wire and it working OK.
You have one Wireless Laptop and it working OK.
You have one Wireless Desktop that cannot obtain IP.
So we are going the assume that the Router is OK.
First step, check thoroughly the Wireless Network part of the computer.
This might help, http://www.ezlan.net/wireless.html
If everything checks OK, move the computer close to the Wireless Router and
see if it works there.
If it does not work close to the Router, and the desktop has also wire NIC
try it with the wire.
If it works with the wire it could be the Wireless card.
BTW. The WMP11 is an old 802.11b card, if it is capable to WEP encryption
only your Wireless might not be safe, and you should replace it with newer
card.
If the Wireless card's Antenna is stuck behind the case and the wall and
there is additional electronic noise in the environment that was generated
lately, it might lost its capacity to connect.
A new card that is faster and has better security is not expensive.

All the wireless network settings are ok.

I used Network Stumbler and found that THREE other wireless networks in area
are using channel 6 so i changed to ch 11 (which i did try b4). i also
adjusted the antenna. it seems ok but haven't been using a lot. i keep
doing a mouse over on the connection icon, signal very good, excellent or no
signal. when no signal it sez connected at 1mps.

from the event viewer - here's a new one:
2/12 4:12am Error: NetBT failed to process a request because encountered
OutOfResources exception(s) in the last 1 hour.
Warning: The browser was unable to retrieve a list of domains from the
browser master \\PAUL on the network
Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{3453D371-64A0-4FDE-AD23-CA725C30C291}. The data is the
error code.

rather than disconnect my tower and move everything to the other room, i
connected the modem & router to my tower. i had to enable the local area
connection but couldn't connect to internet i was able to connect to my
network via the wireless card. i disabled the wireless adapter thinking
there was a conflict but still couldn't connect to internet. the modem ready
light was flashing; i think it had something to do with that.

so i think i will just upgrade the wireless card and hopefully that will
take care of the prob. if not, I'll be Back!

Thanks for your help.
