I have two machines connected via a router sharing a
cable connection. When the XP machine tries to access the
WinME machine, I get the following error:

//<workgroup>(the other PC in the workgroup),is not
accessable. You might not have permission to use this
network. Contact the server administrator to see if you
have access permissions"

"The network path was not found"

What's the cause for this?

Could be any number of things.

Ensure NetBIOS over TCP is enabled on both machines.
Ensure all firewalls are disabled on both machines.

Go to a command prompt, and try to ping the
other PC by both IP address and name.
Eg:

ping 192.168.0.3
ping otherpc

Let us know what happens.

I'm not at the machines right now so I cannot test them.
As soon as I can I'll let you know.

What would be the cause if a machine can ping by IP
address but not machine name? On another network with
NetBios over TCP/IP enabled, I can ping by IP address,
but not machine name. I tried to type "ping \\machine
name" I receive "Ping request couldn't find host. Please
check the name and try again."

If you can ping by IP but not machine name, then there is an issue with name
resolution. This may be a DNS, WINS, Hosts or LMHosts issue. The type of
name resolution is specific to the type of infrastructure you have in place.

OH, I don't get that error for my second question. I
still can access the other computer through the
workgroup.

Hi Ron, I checked the Node type on both machines. On XP,
the type is Hybrid and the other type is broadcast on the
98 machine.

Okay, back to my first question..

I can ping one PC not the other, and can ping itself.
NetBios is enabled over TCP/IP. This network does have a
router firewall. Would that be causing anything? The
other PC cannot see my PC at all.

OK, the node types are fine.

I'm afraid I've lost track of this discussion :-)
I've re-read the thread a few times, but I'm a bit lost.
I no longer understand which machine is the 'other machine',
and which machine the error appears on.

Can you re-phrase that, and re-state the following for clarity:
How many machines are there,
What OS each is running,
What IP address each has,
What name each has,
What the workgroup name is.

Then re-state what can ping what, both by name and IP address.
If pings by name or IP address fail in either direction,
then please give the exact tect of the error it throws,
since there are a number of different errors that ping can throw up,
which indicate different issues.
With the exact error, we can determine if it's name resolution / routing /
simple timeouts.

Note that one-way ping are almost always a firewall problem on the
un-pingable machine.

Back to the future

I'm bumping this thread because i am having the exact same issue as the OP.

I can pick up right from the final post as if no time had past...

I have 3 computers:
PC wired to linksys router, another PC and Laptop connecting wirelessly

Tower_of_Terror 192.168.1.100 (this is the PC with the issue)
AnimalKindgom 192.168.1.104
and Laptop 192.168.1.105

All 3 have WinXP and all 3 are in WorkGroup MSHOME

From ToT I can ping ANY of the IPs and get correct response. I can ping ToT by name and get correct response. If i try to Ping AK or Laptop by name, i get the error "Host not found".

From AK I can ping ANY of the IPs and get correct response. I can ping AK and Laptop by name and get correct response. If i try to Ping ToT by name, I get the error "Host not found".

From Laptop I can ping ANY of the IPs and get correct response. I can ping Laptop and AK by name and get correct response. If i try to Ping ToT by name, I get the error "Host not found".
