Network Drives - Saving ID's & Passwords?

I am new XP, and I am trying to set up some Networked
Drives. I would like these Networked Drives to automatically
connect ("map") each time I log onto my account in XP.
I had no problem doing this under my old 98 machine.

I check the "reconnect at logon" checkbox, but in the
subsequent user ID and password window, there is no
"save ID/password" checkbox offered.

I can successfully connect (map) to all my Networked
Drives initially. However, when I logoff and later log
back on, the drives are all there, but there is a large
red "X" through all their icons. It seems I need to go
through, one by one, and manually re-enter the user ID
and password for each one. :( Once I do that, the
large red "X" disappears, and I can use the drives.

Is there some option or policy I need to set (enable) to
allow Networked Drive to remember their ID's and passwords
so that they can truly, fully, reconnect at logon?

It seems kind of silly to have a "reconnect at logon"
option, but not a "save ID/password" option. So, I am
hopeful that there is just something simple I need to
do to get it to work.

Perhaps the experts in the following Microsoft Newsgroup could
answer your questions: microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web

If you read the newsgroups via Microsoft Communities Web Page:
http://communities2.microsoft.com/c...?query=microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web

If you read newsgroups using a NNTP newsreader, such as Outlook
Express, and use the msnews.microsoft.com news server:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web

And if you post to that newsgroup I suggest that you include
information such as:

- Client System: Operating System version and service pack level
- If client is running WinXP Professional, whether or not Simple
File Sharing is enabled
- Host System: Operating System version and, if applicable,
Service Pack level
- Is this a network for workgroups or a domain environment

And before you post you may want to read through the following

XP Home: I have a similar problem. Why do I have to manually reconnect to networked drives each time I reboot? There is a red X over them until I click and enter my password. There is no option to check so that the connection is automatically made each time I reboot. I do not think this is a workgroup issue because a colleague in the same workgroup with XP Pro has his connections automatically restored upon reboot.

Is there a fix? Do I have to upgrade to XP Pro for this?! So annoying.

Thx-Deb
