I have 2 computers with Windows XP Professional. Both computers are Pentium III and both with McAfee Firewall and AntiVirus. I have tried to types of connections. A serial to serial and another one USB to USB. The serial works only in gaming. But I can't access the workgroup computers and no shared folders are viewed. The USB doesn't work at all. After I have installed it using the drivers given with it on both computers, the connection is established and I can see the icon in the taskbar. But nothing is sent or received on both computers. Can anybody tell me how to fix any of the two connections.

Try turning off the firewall and see if it works. If so, count yourself lucky. I have the same basic problem, and it looks like a lot of other people do, too. Note that you can let certain ports through the firewall that will enable file and printer sharing, but still keep the firewall in place for everything else. Sorry, I don't know which ports, I believe they're in the 300-500 range though. Try searching google for "XP file sharing" you will get a lot of hits, one of those explains which ports you need to let through.

The ports are listed here
