Network Diagnostic Tools

Hi,
Does any one know of any good network diagnostic / auditing software? We have about £500 set aside for the software, but Im confused into which one should I get. I already have the 3com Network Supervisor, that’s ok but it only is good at the 3com manufactures. I would like some software that can detect network misconfigurations and also detect what, how and where everything is plugged into.
