Hi,

Have just downloaded and installed Vista x86, and wonder if there is any way
to rename the Network icon on the desktop to something other than 'Network'?

Any assistance gratefully received.

Why does there have to a reason?
I have an icon with the same name as my internet provider
why?
because I chose to.

Exactly.

In WinXP it was possible to right-click and then click rename - this isn't
available in Vista - is there another way to rename the Network icon?

Control Panel / Network and Internet / Network and Sharing Center / Network
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, customize

Mark,

You are taking this risk on yourself...but here is how to do what you want.

Using process monitor from Microsoft I was able to track the key that is
changed by watching what explorer did. the key to display or not display
that icon for "Network" on the desktop is
HKCU\\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel\{F02C1A0D-BE21-4350-88B0-7367FC96EF3C}

That big long number at the end is the CLSID for what we need. So I went to
that CLSID at

HKCR\CLSID\{F02C1A0D-BE21-4350-88B0-7367FC96EF3C}

The name for the icon can be changed by changing the localized string key in
that folder.. This will prevent the name from change when languages do, but
i doubt you care.

Hope that helps...
