I believe that my network setting are corrupt. I have XP
professional and DSL. I can no longer get an ip address
from my router. The only I can get is 0.0.0.0 I get
winsock errors if I try to ping. Is there any way to
repair my network protocols without completely reloading
my machine. I have tried reloading XP to the same
directory and it hasn't helped.

before reloading your machine you may want to try restarting/resetting your
router first - there is usually a reset button in the back (this will erase
any settings so save/record them first. after resetting you should check
that the router has the latest firmware which would be available on the
manufacturers web site.

If this doesn't work you can try opening a command prompt and typing
"ipconfig /renew" to force the renewal of the IP address. you should also
double check that the NIC is plugged in and is not loose in the socket.

If you're getting 0.0.0.0, it suggests your machine isn't attempting to get
DHCP - otherwise you'd be showing the 169.x.x.x IP address on an XP
machine.
Try opening a command prompt and type in ipconfig /all and take note of all
the settings. Post them back here.

What items are installed in the Network Connections properties for your
Local Area Connection?

Try setting your configuration to be statically set to 192.168.1.x (where x
= something > 1).

at that point you should be able to access the router's web management page,
see if DHCP service is running on the LAN section of the page.

This happened on an XP installation and all efforts to correct it
failed. As a last resort prior to a reinstall, I started looking at
installed programs, and Kazaa proved to be the culprit.
