 Hi, now that I have managed to sort out the issue I had with messenger with the forums help I have another problem that I cannot get my head around. I had to reinstall windows some time ago on my Acer Travelmate 290 laptop (bit old I know but it will do me for now). Since the reinstall I have only been able to access the net using a "dongle". I have been onto the acer site and managed to reinstall most of the drivers but cannot figure out how to download the network controller drivers.
I have looked in device manager and this is the only hardware with a problem. I have tried to reinstall the driver but as I dont have any of the software discs ( bought the laptop on ebay) the driver cant be found.
I would love to be back to using "WIFI" and so would my son and then he can have the dongle back for his desktop and I can work on getting that up and running.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Please explain "Dongle" to me ... are you on about a PCMCIA dongle?

In my day ... a Dongle was a device that one needed to use a piece of software ... surprised MS don't re-invent it. ;)

If you have access to the net via that Laptop, then give 'Windows Update Site' a look see ... use the Custom button ... you may find drivers there for your card.

Alternatively, buy a newer card that should come with software.

EDIT: check your modle # here ... http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/tm_290.html

By dongle i mean the netgear usb adaptor, which does have software that I have installed on the laptop, that came with the router. This was to be used for my son's pc and not the laptop but at the moment i have no alternative.
I will check out the windows update site, thanks

ah, right ... a netgear usb adaptor ... a 'dongle' is a misuse of the word. :D

We don't want to see 'dongles' dangling out the back of our PCs. ;)

Good luck with the drivers. :thumb:

Mr Mucks - USB to Bluetooth adaptors are sold as 'dongles' it's common word usage right now.

I know this as I recently purchased a dongle to connect with a bluetooth portable appliance tester.

It also 'talks' to my mobile phone as well.

So, Mr Dinosaur, I'm afraid the English language evolves and changes, just check out the yearly updates/omissions the Oxford English dictionary makes :)

Naw ... using the word 'Dongle' just scares the sh ' out of me, so there. Still surprised MS haven't "thought" of the idea to stop piracy, but there again, the 'far east countries' are quite good with electronics.

I am getting too old for this game ... gawd, we'll have phones that play music next.

Thanks for the website address I have already been onto this site and downloaded much of what is there but I am not too sure what to download for the network. I have already installed:-
Intel WLAN b Driver Version 1.1.6.0
Intel PRO/Wireless 2200 LAN Adapters Version 8.0.12.9000
ProSet Software
The above seemed to sort out part of my problem and now windows can configure the network etc. I wonder do I need to uninstall the software for the usb adaptor because at the moment in properties my laptop connects using that.........
