I am trying to connect two computers to the Internet through a router and my cable modem. The cabel modem is plugged into the router and both computers are plugged into the router and allthe lights inboth the router and cable modem are lit like they should be but on my computer I can't connect to the internet. When I go to network connections in the control panel nothing shows up and when I try to create a new connection or use the network setup wizard nothing shows up. Did I do something to keep any network connections from showing up? I didn't see anything there even before I set up the network. Also, do I need two IP addresses to have two computers running off one cable modem or can I use only one?

What about the lights on the LAN cards in your computer? Are they OK as
well?

Can Windows see the device drivers for your LAN cards (eg ctrl panel ->
Performance and Maint. -> System -> Hardware -> device manager button->
expand Network Adaptors)? If so then select the driver -> right click ->
Properties might tell you something. There is also a troubleshoot button
there.

If the wizard doesn't generate any on screen errors when you run it perhaps
some appear in the event logs? Note the time you run the wizard and have a
look using the event viewer admin utility. See if any occur around the time
noted.
Also, do I need two IP addresses to have two computers running off one
cable modem or can I use only one?

No you only need one. The most likely set up will be...Your Router should
get an IP address from your ISP to use on the cable side and a local IP on
the computer side (Typically something like 192.168.0.1). Then your
computers will use DHCP to get their local IP addresses from your router (eg
192.168.0.1 then 192.168.0.2 etc)
