I have subscribed to a cable based internet service. Problem is I can't
seem to get my laptop to recognize the modem via the Ethernet cable. The
red X remains present over the double screen icon in the system tray. I've
been told by the company, Road Runner, that all I need to do is plug in the
cable and I am ready to go but nothing happens. I called the service and
they recognize activity from the modem is active thus I have service but
they cannot see the service working on the system. Any suggestions on what
to do with my network connection?

If you haven't done so already, you might want to post your
question to the following newsgroup. That's where you'll find
the networking experts.

microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web

That said, here are some basic things you can do. Note: Based
on your description, I'm assuming that your laptop is connected
directly to a cable modem which does not double as a router and
that you don't have a separate router in between the laptop and
modem. If that's not the case, post back because that would
change how you troubleshoot this issue.

First, try a different Ethernet cable between your laptop and
the modem.

Next, shut down your laptop and disconnect the power cable from
the cable modem.
After a short wait, reconnect the power cable to the modem.
Wait for the lights on the front of the modem to remain lit.
Now startup your laptop and check the status of your
connection.

If that doesn't fix the problem, try the following.
Right click on the network icon in the notification area and
select Status from the menu.
Confirm that this icon represents your Local Area Connection.
Click on the Support tab.
Hit the Repair button.

If none of the above procedures help, post back with
information about your modem and laptop. Make and model number
will suffice. Also, do the following;

Go to Start -> Run and enter cmd.exe in the Open box. Click OK.
Note: If you do not have Run on your Start menu, hit the
Windows key + R key at the same time to launch the Run dialog.
In the command prompt window, enter the following command.

ipconfig /all > C:\IPinfo.txt

Next, go to My Computer and open your C drive.
Open IPinfo.txt.
Copy the contents of this file and Paste it into a reply to
this message.

Good luck
