Network Connections Service Fails to Load

I am having trouble getting the Network Connections
Service to load on Windows XP Professional. I am working
on an XP image that was configured using Sysprep. After
running the Mini-Setup the Network Connections Service
tries to start but never succeeds (though I can get the
internet!?). The image is virus free and has all
Patches. Any suggestions?? (I cannot manually start the
service either)

That's the strange part...I don't actually get an error.
If I right click my computer-->manage-->services I can see
the Network Connections Service trying to start (under the
status field "Starting" appears). I just checked the
status this morning and it finally started and everything
acts normally. However, this means that the service took
at least 3 hours to start!! Any reason for this? Thanks
for any help!!

I think I solved this problem, so I'll post what I did
incase it can help anyone else. I believe that by default
the Network Connections Service is set to Manual in
Windows XP (in 2000 it is set to Automatic). The service
therefore does not start unless initiated by the user.
One way to initiate this is to right click My Network
Places and choose properties; this starts the service (you
can try manually starting the service by right clicking on
the service and selecting start, but this always resulted
in a timeout error for me). In my case, the service was
taking so long to start that my machine appeared to be
unresponsive to me trying to get network properties. By
changing Network Connections from Manual to Automatic, the
service loads with Windows and loads a LOT faster (within
30 seconds as opposed to hours). Though this may just be
a work around, at least it works!! (Also, I'm running a
P4 1.8GHz machine, so the long load time was not a machine
speed issue). Hope this helps anyone out there who has
had the same misfortune as me.

Well even in manual mode, explorer will start it when you log in. Don't
know why it would take hours though.
