After configuring a computer to join a LAN and workgroup,
the computer still will not find the workgroup or it's
server. Find Computer fails with UNC. I was able to
bypass this by doing a find on the IP adress and mapping
the path to the needed directoy, but this is not
acceptable as a long term solution.
The same computer will also not connect to the internet
through the LAN.

Hi Lorne,

Can you verify that you have NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled?
The steps to do this in windows XP are:
1) Click "Start"
2) "Run"
3) type "ncpa.cpl" - this will open up the network connections folder
4) right-click on your Local Area Connection
5) select/highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"
6) click "Properties" - a properties page appears
7) click the "Advanced" button - Settings page appears
8) click the WINS tab
9) what NetBIOS setting is selected? - Try the "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP"
if it is not selected
