When off-line a box keeps popping-up. The box is titled
at the top "Network Connections". In the box the text
reads, "You (or a program) have requested information
from www._name_.__. Which connection do you want to use?"

My computer is used at home, it is not connected to a
network. The web addresses (indicated by www._name_.__.
above) differ and seem to be randomly chosen with each pop-
up of the box. I can remove the box by clicking the
Cancel button at the bottom of the box but a new box
appears within a few seconds.

Can anyone tell me how to stop this?

Thank you.

First you should enable your firewall. If you don't have one use the
built-in one provided w/XP > right click your connection > go to properties
then to Advanced Tab > check protect my computer and network by limiting
or preveting access to this computer from the internet > apply > ok
Scan for Spyware - Get both of the following programs, run Ad-Aware first.
Ad-aware - http://www.lavasoft.de/ - FAQ, Help & Forum @ Site.
Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org - FAQ, Help & Forum @ Site.
Important *Check for Updates* immediately after you download and before you
scan.

Also, before you scan, have this program on hand in case you loose your
internet connection.

It is a good idea to run these programs in safe mode. Instructions for Safe
Mode here:

Also turn OFF System Restore:
Right click My Computer > go to properties > on the System Restore Tab >
check Turn Off System Restore on all Drives, Reboot. You can enable System
Restore once you have cleaned the Sypware.

Follow through with preventative measures

Windows Updates - Update Windows regularly (at the very least once a
month) - ALWAYS download Critical Updates. You can set your computer for
automatic updates if you prefer.
