Does anyone know why after you delete a networking
device, and reinstall it, Windows adds the network
connection with a higher number (Ex. Net. conn. 2,3,4
etc.) as if it didn't really delete the other ones.

In the past, the only way I fixed this is by rebuilding
the machine. But that's unacceptable, give the fact that
we're in the year 2004, and PCs are much better and
reliable.

Why do you rebuild the machine? Has it caused problems that you don't
mention here?
I dont think it does hide them. I don't know the reasons for this happening
but I put it down to xp making sure it's configured safely. The registry is
often not flushed fully until the machine's closed down.
I destroy and recreate connections often for testing purposes and had no
problems yet. Ive not tried a reboot after deleting an old connection to see
if the numbering's correct then, but I'll usually just rename the connection
if I want it to look tidy.
