I am trying to setup broadband for 1st time. hardware all setup fine but
computer doesnt connect to internet. there is no 'LAN or high speed internet'
under network connections in windows XP. why not? how can I sort this out?

Do you have a firewall? If your answer is yes, does it permit connection
with Internet?

I think it is to do with network adapters. how do I find out if I have one?
can I change it easily? where are they installed?
nothing listed in BIOS - is this the place to look?
or could it be device drivers?
my dell is about 6 yrs old and had never had a LAN or broadband connection b4
firewall is not an issue

How are you trying to connect your broadband? To see if you have a network
adapter - Open Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manger and look in
the device list for Network for Network Adapters. If necessary open it by
clicking the plus sign (as it may have some items for a dial up adapter).
If you have no Ethernet adapter it's inexpensive to add a network card.
