I just purchased a new NIC for my computer because the one
on my motherboard stopepd working.

Before i bought a new NIC, i had temporarily installed a
friends NIC, and that was able to connet to the DNS, ect,
worked alright.

Now, my new D-Link NIC shows a link with my Dlink router,
BUT XP is not showing a DNS or default gateway for that
connection.

I cannot acesses my Router setup page or the internet.

Why would one NIC(my friends) work fine, and a brand new
one not get a default gateway and DNS?

Any help is appreciated!

If the D-Link router is configured only for a small number of clients, it
will stop assigning DHCP addresses (which in this case would include your
DNS and default gateway) when it thinks that number of "slots" is all taken.
Many of the broadband routers like this have such a setting and they cache
the MAC address of the clients they give addresses to. Since your friend's
card had a different mac address than your new one, you would not be able to
get an address yourself until his address expired, if the setting were set.

You can find out quickly if this is the case by power cycling the router and
then doing "ipconfig /release" followed by "ipconfig /renew" at the command
prompt. Assuming that nothing besides the NIC card has changed, this is the
most likely cause. Post back with the results of "ipconfig /all" if it
still doesn't work after that.
