network card shutdown

I am running windows xp pro on two different ibm machines.
the 1st one is a netvista that has xp pro as oem, and an
onboard intel nic. the 2nd machine is an older ibm
aptiva running an upgrade from windows 98se to xp pro,
using a netgear FA311 nic. i find that i must ere-enable
the cards all the time. why? has anyone else had this
problem and what is the fix?
 
About a year ago Netgear stopped producing the 311 and
went back to the 310. We had alot of issues with the 311,
so that may be where the problem lies.
