Upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows XP - no problems
experienced. However after a few weeks, the network card
was 'not found' by the computer. I ran the necessary
checks and was able to 'ping' the computer indicating that
the card was working but it was not recognised by the
computer. In fact the computer found a network card in
PCI 6(non-existant) whereas the network card was in PCI
2. This is notlogical as the network connection with the
other computer is still not enabled. I have checked out
both computers with no problems found other than the
refusalof the computer to recognised the installed card.

I must be missing something basic or simple, can anyone
throw some light on this?

Thanking everyone or anyone for reading my message and I
wait with bated breath

Maybe you need a BIOS update?
Start > Run > winmsd
System Information | System Summary | BIOS Version/Date
If you do apply a BIOS update
(Obtain from system or motherboard manufacturer)
you will then need to run a Repair Install of XP
in order to integrate the OS with the new BIOS.
Be advised that will put your system back to the state
that is on the XP CD and all XP critical updates will need
to be applied including the patch that resolves the vulnerabilty
that msblaster worm and its variants attack in order to access
the system. So be sure you are behind a router or firewall
before connecting to the Internet again.

Alternatively, if I were you, I would uninstall that NIC from
Device Manager and then shut down and move the NIC to
a different PCI slot and then reboot and see if the system
can then properly detect and install the card. Also, if you
are not using the modem (if exists) I would either disable it
in Device Manager and or uninstall it also and shut down
and physically remove it. There are some older systems
that have a conflict between the modem and NIC after
upgrading to XP.
