If it has a big red X then the network cable is unplugged, as simple as that

There is a big red X, but there is NO NETWORK at all. Just the computer
sitting on my desk with a printer & scanner hooked up to it.

You either have a network card enabled, or your motherboard has integrated
networking and it is enabled. If this does not interfere with normal system
functions, (it shouldn't), just ignore it.

Right Click on My network Places and click properties, locate the Connection
with red X, right click and choose properties. See what adapter this
unplugged connection is running on and post that back to me.

How are you hooked into the internet? If you are on Broadband (DSL or cable)
you are using a Modem connected either via a Ethernet or USB cable thus XP
considers it a Network. Suggestion: disconnect then reconnect the cable to
see if that has an affect. I had this problem with an Ethernet connection
which eventually led to the discovery that the internal Ethernet Card had
gone bad even though The Device Manager said it was fine.

Not neccesarily, Satelite Card 4 satelite internet also has a local area
connection in XP, as do certain modems on adsl. Not network cards tho.

Since you don't intend to set up any kind of network, you should be able to
go to My Network Places; from the left pane, select, View Network
Connections. You should see something in there stating that it is some sort
of Local Area Connection or a description of an NIC. You can right click on
the icon and select Disable from the menu and the little picture should not
bother you any more. I do know how annoying that is when the balloon comes
up every two minutes to tell you that you cable is unplugged...especially
when you have no cable.
Hope this helps,
Bert

If it has a red X over it and you don't want the icon showing, open Network
Connections and right click on the Local Area Network and disable it. That
gets rid of the icon from the tray.
