network cable is unplugged

Help i have put dlink dfe-530tx+ pci ethernet adapter in
my 2 computers connented with cat 5e cable. Both
computers show that the network cable is unplugged. i
tried 2 different cables and get the same thing. i am
running win xp home. any advise please help.

Computer to computer?
You should have a crossover cable, not a straight through cable.

If you're connecting two computers directly to each other, you need a
cross-over cable.

an icon is saying that my network cable is unplugged, it hasnt done this before and I dont even no wot 1 is. could you help me please? if so please email me with a solution at (e-mail address removed)
