My laptop was working great connecting to the internet.
Now, all of the sudden, all I get is network cable
unplugged. I replaced the cable to no avail. I plugged
the cable directly to my cable modem (bypassing the
router) and it still wouldn't work. I even went out and
purchased a USB ethernet adapter to see if my network card
was bad. This still didn't work. As you might expect,
this computer is running XP Home. I have a desktop
running "98" and it works fine. I even contacted Windows
XP support (paid $35) and still don't have an answer -
they said it was a hardware probelem. I don't think so
unless a brand new purchase was bad also. Any
suggestions????

Hi Les
Maybe uninstall/reboot and let XP reinstall the NIC card ?
Make sure you have the latest drivers.

Just a thought

I am having the identical issue. I was told by my cable
provider that my signal is low to the modem. Please let
me know if you find an answer to this problem, I will do
the same.

I don't think that is the answer - I eliminated my router
and plugged to modem directly into the laptop and still
the same result.

Signal is low to the modem? That's a new one to me.

Do you get a solid light on your router for that cable. It's called a Link
Beat, and is sometimes labeled Link or LB.

Yellowpike,

Already tried that; also did a clean install of XP and
still same thing. The problem is with both the ethernet
card and also a USB ethernet adapter. Strange, huh?
