I have two computers running Windows XP at home. I want
to network them together so I can transfer files between
them.

When I plug in the cross-over cable to the computers I
can see the LAN icon in "My Network Connections" under
LAN or High-Speed Internet.j

After running the "set up new LAN or small home/office
network" wizard I notice that the LAN icon is now under a
heading that says "Network Bridge". Is that normal and
necessary in order to have two computers networked that
my LAN connection is now under "Network Bridge"?

Thanks,

Jamie

Yes it's normal but not necessary unless you want to use more than 1 type of
port to connect to the same subnet of your LAN. Is there something else
listed like a firewire port too? see the info at the following link

It's not necessary to use it unless you need it. In fact, having it running
gave me problems when attempting to connect my machine as ICS server to a
cable internet connection that would only recognize registered MAC
addresses. At that time turning off the bridge made the connection leap into
life.
