Right now I have a fractional T1 plugged into a 1ghz box
which is our gateway, and then that machine plugs into a
switch that has about 20 connections at any time.

Would upgrading this box (i.e. more cpu) help with network
traffic speeds at all? The machine appears very taxed
whenever I use programs on it, even though theres really
no visible cpu usage in task manager.

Hard to say without knowing how it is "taxed". Is the drive running
constantly? Is the machine sluggish but not hammering the drive? What
gateway software are you using?

I haven't seen routing ever take up much system resources. We have a 486
box routing for one of our clients.

It's just slow.. no drive activity though, just slow. You
know like, when you have a crushed network cable and the
whole machine takes a crap but theres no visible reason
why, until you look down and a desk is sitting on it. That
kind of slowness, though it's not that bad. Were acually
just running winproxy on it(which is changing very soon),
and win2k sp4 with all updates.
