I'm only directing this a the W2K networking noozgroop because I can't find a
general windows networking discussion.
I have re-formatted the HD of a Compaq mini-desktop PC I promised to repair
for the local school, only to find the CDROM doesn't work, so I can't
reinstall W2K. I can't replace the CD reader because it has a proprietory
connection like a laptop drive.
I've reformatted the disk FAT32, so presumably if I could boot from a
suitable floppy set up to access my own network of mixed W98 and WXP
computers from a command prompt, then I could access the i386 directory of
the setup CD a local CDROM and install straight from there...?
So how do I create a DOS floppy that will allow me to do this?

You might find a network boot disk on www.bootdisk.com.

Can't you temporarily add a 'standard' IDE drive to the HDD channel as a
slave?

Take a look at Bart's network boot disk at the link below. The problem will
be getting it to work with the network adapter but Bart's site has several
drivers available.

Otherwise you may need to try and remove the hard drive and place it in a
desktop computer as a secondary/slave drive to transfer the necessary files.
You may also find that you can connect another cdrom to the IDE channel even
if you can not replace the original one. --- Steve
