Hi,
I have a NAS unit and was wondering if it was possible to get some sortware
that could scan HDD's over the network for bad sectors etc?

I don't know of anything that will do that, but then again, I don't know a
lot. I'd suggest you start by contacting the device mfr's support to see if
they have a utility.

Hi
This vendor offers Disk Drive Utilities that work over the network.
Jack (MS, MVP-Networking)

The majority of these devices run Linux, though a few run Windows Embedded.

In either case you need to establish a telnet session if the device permits
this, and then run chkdsk (windows) or fsck (linux) as root/admin.

Cheers Jack, came across that site the other day trying it out now.
Having problems trying to connect to the remote NAS unit asking for username
and password, but I'll give tech support a call

recieved this from tech support of R-STUDIO, so I guess this software will
not work

In a sense NAS is just a remote computer with its own OS and disks with
probably proprietary file system. Hence recovery using R-Studio is only
possible when NAS is dissembled, disks are connected to a normal PC, and
file system being used is not proprietary.
