Ok I have the words "local and internet" showing in here, I need to know how
to change from that to showing "local only" and back again. What steps are
there to do this?

Since that's based on our detection of whether you're connected to the
Internet, disconnect your network from the Internet and we'll stop detecting
it. ;-)

I also want to know how to do this, except the other way. My Windows Vista
HP is stuck on "Local Only", obviously m,eaning that I cant get on the
internet. How do I change it to "Local and Internet"?

Thanks all, and HELP

Let's clarify one thing, first -- are you successfully connected to the
Internet and Vista isn't recognizing that, or are you experiencing
connection problems?

If the latter, right-click the Network icon and choose "Diagnose," then see
what it suggests.

Yea, I ahve run that and it says that there may be a problem with my DNS
server. I have the same DNS server as another computer on the same network I
am trying to connect the new laptop to. Any ideas??? What should those
settings be.

A few questions:
1. Am I right in thinking that you have a network connection but are unable
to access the Internet?
2. And IE is unable to download web pages?
3. What is the output from "ipconfig /all"?

Thanks

Jim

Morning.

You are right in your assumptions.

1. I do have a network connection, but am not able to connect to the internet
2. IE (or Firefox) is unable to download anything
3. Output of ipconfig/all as below.

The diagnose and repair functioncomes out as "There may be a problem with
your Domain Name Server (DNS) configuration" but I cant figure it out.

I have also removed all antivirus (AVG Free) and tried that. No differnace
so have re-installed.

I have wireless, but have been leaving that turned off and just trying to
get Earthnet working, then worry about wireless.

Thanks for your help.

Hi there.
Yea the DNS is 172.19.250.7. I tried making it 172.18.250.7 but nothing
works.

I have since re-installed by operating system to the factory default. I can
ping my DNS, things are just not talking. The HP helpdesk think it could be
a setting on my router since I can network fine and everything else, or the
router just doesnt like vista.

Im gonna go looking for some updated drvers for the router if I can and see

Hmm.... Your machine is 172.18.250.27/24, a private IP. Your default
gateway is 172.18.250.6, which is on the same network. The DNS server is
172.19.250.7, which is a *different* network but still in private space.
What type of network is this? It looks a little complex (multiple subnets)
to be a typical home network. Is this at work or school, or do you have
control of the intervening devices?

You can ping the DNS server, but can't resolve queries against it while
other machines can? It almost sounds like something on the DNS side is
excluding your machine -- is there a domain or some form of restricted
access in place there?

Yea, a strange one I know. Its a work "private' network. A network for non
work internet access for our laptops etc, but its set up at work. Im trying
to find out about the differnet addresses. It strange. Also trying to get
into the main router to see the ip address setup etc, but the passwords not
working. Aaauugghhh the hassels.

Think I may have to just give up if I can get into the router and update or
see what the settings are that are blocking me.

The Joys. Thanks for your help though.

A few questions:
1. Am I right in thinking that you have a network connection but are
unable
to access the Internet?
2. And IE is unable to download web pages?
3. What is the output from "ipconfig /all"?

Thanks

Jim

Yea, I ahve run that and it says that there may be a problem with my
DNS
server. I have the same DNS server as another computer on the same
network I
am trying to connect the new laptop to. Any ideas??? What should
those
settings be.

:

Let's clarify one thing, first -- are you successfully connected to
the
Internet and Vista isn't recognizing that, or are you experiencing
connection problems?

If the latter, right-click the Network icon and choose "Diagnose,"
then
see
what it suggests.

I also want to know how to do this, except the other way. My
Windows
Vista
HP is stuck on "Local Only", obviously m,eaning that I cant get
on
the
internet. How do I change it to "Local and Internet"?

Thanks all, and HELP

:

Why do you want to know how to get it to show local only?

Since that's based on our detection of whether you're
connected
to
the
Internet, disconnect your network from the Internet and we'll
stop
detecting it. ;-)

Ok I have the words "local and internet" showing in here, I
need
to
know
how
to change from that to showing "local only" and back again.
What
steps
are
there to do this?
